What Is MP4

Mp4's or rather the term mpeg-4 was developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization). It is a format specific for multimedia, the most common uses are for digital audio and video, and it is a certain type of container that holds all information including audio, video, 2D and 3D graphics, and also still images (like pictures). MP4 can also contain other types of competing technology e.g. ogg, vob, wmv, ratdvd, divx media format, Matroska (mkv) and others to name a few.

MP4, despite containing both audio and video, has a very small file size and can be sent over the internet at great speed. The file can be watched in perfect quality immediately upon receiving. The MP4 container format is now widely used by Apple products like iTunes, iPhone, iPad, iPod, other device like Play Station Potable (PSP), and over the internet.

Here are some file extensions used on files that contain data in the *.mp4 format:

.mp4: official extension, for audio, video and advanced content files

.m4a: for audio-only files; can safely be renamed to *.mp4, though opinions differ on the wisdom of this.

.m4p: FairPlay protected files

.mp4v,. m4v: video-only (sometimes also used for raw mpeg-4 video streams not in the *.mp4 container format).
