What Is AVI

Audio Video Interleave, known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback. Like the DVD video format, AVI files support multiple streaming audio and video, although these features are seldom used. Most AVI files also use the file format extensions developed by the Matrox OpenDML group in February 1996. These files are supported by Microsoft, and are unofficially called "AVI 2.0".

AVI is not as complicated as MPEG. Since WIN3.1, AVI has been published. The greatest advantage of AVI is its good quality. Even now, it is still widely used by consumers and even supported by some standalone DVD players. The disadvantage of AVI is also very obvious: the large size. Due to this, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 are introduced. With the same size, the quality of AVI is relatively worse than MPEG-2. According to different needs, the resolution of AVI can be adjusted randomly. Lower resolution can significantly reduce its size, but the image quality will inevitably suffer. Yet, it is easy to make an AVI file even on the low configuration computer. Often, people would convert to other format after the completion of AVI.

The worse is the compression standards are not uniform. It's common to see that the higher version of Windows Media Player can't play AVI file that encoded with earlier codec, while the newly encoded AVI files can't be play with the lower version of Windows Media Player. Even the AVI file can be play then we may experience audio video out of sync problems. The solution to all these is to download lacked codec.

Uncompressed AVI
AVI files can be created with no Compression, resulting in extremely large file sizes, but with no loss of quality from the input video to the saved file. This also requires no codecs to be installed, either for saving or playback. This is generally not recommended. Instead it's better to use a Lossless Compression format like Huffyuv.
