What Is AIFF

AIFF stands for Audio Interchange File Format, originally developed by Apple Computer in 1987-88 and used by Macintosh computers and Silicon Graphics for storing high-quality sampled audio data. AIFF is able to store monaural, stereo or multi-channel sound and can be used on on a Mac or a PC and other electronic audio devices.

AIFF file has the extension .aif on a PC, but it is not needed when used on a MAC. AIFF is uncompressed file which make the file hold high CD quality audio and are excellent for burning to CD. Its size is quite large compared to the MP3 format due to its uncompressed format. AIFF is a lossless format like wave, if you convert AIFF into MP3, there is no way to restore the full quality, and if a compressed format such as MP3 is converted to AIFF, some of the data from the sound file has already removed, it won't sound any better than the MP3 file does.
